Needles start losing chlorophyll. Change is measurable in the near-infrared well before the eye registers it.
Now it's obvious — and the spot has already expanded outward into neighboring green timber.
Needles gone. Salvage value gone. What's left is a removal cost and a much larger perimeter.
Every signal we can capture before visible damage makes the warning earlier, and an earlier warning is worth more standing timber. That is the entire point of the system.

Why it holds up
Ironwood's founder is a Navy veteran, MSHA-certified mine foreman, and mine rescue gas specialist who spent years underground building and maintaining custom gas detection systems where a drifting sensor was not an inconvenience. That is the same discipline — calibration, drift compensation, knowing when an instrument is lying to you — applied to a pine stand instead of a mine shaft.
